The main goal of a fetal echo is to provide clarity. Every appointment ends with a detailed explanation of what was seen, ensuring that you understand the results and the next steps for your pregnancy care before you leave the clinic.
The majority of families who are referred for a fetal echocardiogram receive a completely normal result, bringing peace of mind.
Fetal echo findings generally fall into one of three categories. Here is what they mean:
The heart structure, chambers, valves, rhythm, and blood flow are developing as expected. No further cardiac monitoring or follow-up scans are necessary during your pregnancy.
A minor structural variation (like a tiny hole or valve asymmetry) or a soft marker is noted. These usually do not cause problems, but we will schedule a follow-up scan later in pregnancy to monitor development.
A structural abnormality in the baby's heart is detected. Finding this early is highly beneficial — it allows our clinical team to create a specialized birth plan, coordinate with neonatologists and pediatric cardiac surgeons, and ensure immediate care at birth.
Immediately following the scan, you will be handed a structured clinical report. This report details the positioning, measurements of the chambers and outflow vessels, heart rate, rhythm, and specific Doppler flow patterns. A copy of this report will be shared with your obstetrician to ensure coordinated care.
