Being referred for a fetal echo is a common step during pregnancy. It does not mean something is wrong — it means your care team wants a clearer picture.

What is a fetal echo?

A fetal echocardiogram is a specialised ultrasound of your baby's heart, performed and interpreted by a fetal cardiologist — a specialist trained specifically in evaluating the heart before birth.

A referral for a fetal echo does not mean a problem has been found. Most referrals are for routine screening, or simply to confirm what was already seen on an earlier scan.
