What is a fetal echo?

A fetal echocardiogram is a specialised ultrasound of your baby's heart, performed and interpreted by a fetal cardiologist — a specialist trained specifically in evaluating the heart before birth.

A referral for a fetal echo does not mean a problem has been found. Most referrals are for routine screening, or simply to confirm what was already seen on an earlier scan.

The scan usually takes about 15–30 minutes, depending on your baby's position and the images needed.
