Why 18–22 Weeks is the Gold Standard

Early Fetal Echocardiography (11–16 Weeks)

In certain high-risk situations, an early targeted scan can be performed starting in the late first trimester (11–13 weeks) or early second trimester (14–16 weeks).

When is early scan recommended? It is offered when there is increased nuchal translucency, abnormal first-trimester screening, a strong family history of heart defects, or when early routine scans raise a suspicion.

Important Limitation: Early scans can identify many severe defects, but they cannot replace the comprehensive 18–22 week study. Because the heart is still very small, all early scans require confirmation during the 18–22 week window.
